Is observability just the new name for system monitoring? This is what Oliver Cronk,Scott Rowan and myself set out to discuss in this episode of Beyond the Hype. We discussed what observability means in modern distributed software architectures, how it differs from traditional monitoring, and the challenges of implementing it at scale.
Spoiler alert: I answered "no" to the question above.
This was a really fun conversation with Martin Thwaites and Jessica Kerr on a new episode of O11ycast. We talked about my approach to evangelise better observability practices at Skyscanner, and some of my experience on joining the OpenTelemetry Governance Committee. We got serious about minimising organisational costs, and nerded out about the future of auto-instrumentation, with some advice on detecting and avoiding over-instrumentation.
