Beyond the Hype

Beyond The Hype Logo

Is observability just the new name for system monitoring? This is what Oliver Cronk,Scott Rowan and myself set out to discuss in this episode of Beyond the Hype. We discussed what observability means in modern distributed software architectures, how it differs from traditional monitoring, and the challenges of implementing it at scale.

Spoiler alert: I answered "no" to the question above.

O11ycast

This was a really fun conversation with Martin Thwaites and Jessica Kerr on a new episode of O11ycast. We talked about my approach to evangelise better observability practices at Skyscanner, and some of my experience on joining the OpenTelemetry Governance Committee. We got serious about minimising organisational costs, and nerded out about the future of auto-instrumentation, with some advice on detecting and avoiding over-instrumentation.

PurePerformance

A thoroughly enjoyable chat with Andi Grabner and Brian Wilson on their PurePerformance podcast, where we talked about the latest status of OpenTelemetry, lessons learned from adopting OpenTelemetry in a large organisation, considerations between metrics and traces, the difference between statistical and tail based sampling and much more!

OpenTelemetry In Use

I joined Michael Hausenblas on the first episode of his new OpenTelemetry In Use podcast, where we discussed how Skyscanner migrated from OpenTracing to OpenTelemetry with zero friction thanks to the shared API design of these projects, and the value of open standards to reduce maintenance toil and cognitive load for engineers maintaining complex distributed systems.
